The Father and Son Who Survived Genocide in Gaza

During Novara’s coverage of the US Election in Dearborn, Michigan, Richard Hames and the team met a young Palestinian-American man, Fares Awad, who insisted we go to his family home the following day.

Aside from the general hospitality typical of Palestinians, the reason he was so insistent that we come over was so we could meet another family. This family, the Abu Shabaans, lived in Gaza City in the months following October 7th.

This video captures the conversation Richard had with the 19-year-old Yousif Abu Shaaban and his father Abedalazeez Abu Shaaban.

In this conversation, they talk about their lives in Gaza, their experience of Israeli bombardment and how and why they managed to escape.
