Zarah Sultana has announced her “critical support” to the Green candidate at the upcoming Gorton and Denton byelection while taking a swipe at Your Party.

In a post on social media she criticised the “unelected interim leadership of Your Party” for failing to set up local branches and enabling members to select a candidate.

In the absence of a Your Party option, she said that Green’s Hannah Spencer, “a local plumber and trade unionist, is the strongest challenger to Labour and Reform.

“I am, therefore, giving my personal critical support to her and the Green party in this byelection, and I urge others to do the same,” she said.

Sultana’s half-hearted endorsement came after Grassroots Left, a grouping within the party for which she is a candidate for the party’s central executive committee, released a statement saying: “Grassroots Left will not lend unconditional support to the Green party candidate because the Greens are a pro-capitalist, pro-Nato party and have been enforcing cuts in councils all over the country.”

Sultana spent the end of last year drawing dividing lines between the nascent Your Party and the Greens, saying the two are “fundamentally different”, citing Your Party’s “anti-Zionist” and “anti-imperialist” politics.
