Statement in Reference to Tweet of 15 April
17 April 2024
We are aware of a statement made on 15 April by Mohammed El-Kurd, a writer and activist we interviewed last year. We respect Mohammed’s work and hold him in high esteem. But we were disappointed by his statement, parts of which are not true.
We were aware of Mohammed’s concerns and had sought to address them through our complaints process in February. At his request, we removed his interview from our channels on 4 March.
Mohammed’s concerns centred on a tweet posted by Aaron Bastani, a contributing editor at Novara Media, on 14 October 2023.
Mohammed requested an apology from Novara Media. We declined because our employees’ social media activity is beyond our reasonable control as a publisher, except in instances where it amounts to a clear breach of contract.
We respect that our employees will hold a range of political views, and we have a longstanding principle of not subjecting tweets to editorial oversight.
We strongly reject the false allegation that Aaron collaborated with the British police.
We stand by our reporting on Palestine over the years, and remain committed to exposing Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza.
