An internal autopsy by the US Democratic party found Kamala Harris lost significant support in the 2024 election because of the Biden administration’s policy of arming and funding Israel’s genocide in Gaza, according to a report by American news website Axios.

The autopsy, which has not been made public, will be seen as vindication for pro-Palestine advocates, who have long maintained that Harris’ support for Israel played a pivotal role in her loss to Donald Trump.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC), the party’s executive leadership, is under mounting pressure to release the report, and has been accused of keeping it secret partly because of the findings on Gaza.

Activists from the Institute for Middle East Understanding Policy Project, an advocacy group, met with DNC officials to discuss the party’s Gaza policy, Axios reported.

Hamid Bendaas, a spokesperson for the institute, said that during the meeting “the DNC shared with us that their own data also found that policy was, in their words, a ‘net-negative’ in the 2024 election.”

Axios said it had independently verified that Democratic officials behind the autopsy believed the issue of Gaza harmed the party’s standing among some voters.
