Wes Streeting has resigned from his post as health secretary, paving the way for a potential leadership challenge against prime minister Keir Starmer.
In a letter posted on social media, Streeting told the prime minister he had “lost confidence” in him but stopped short of launching his own leadership bid.
Almost 100 MPs have called on Starmer to resign after he oversaw abysmal election results for the Labour party on 7 May.
Streeting, who like Starmer is widely disliked by the left of the party, reportedly has enough support from MPs to challenge the prime minister.
The former health secretary has been criticised for accelerating privatisation of the NHS and overseeing an increasingly close relationship with US spytech firm Palantir, which has worked with Israel throughout its genocide in Gaza.
