About Us
Novara Media is an independent left-wing media organisation addressing the issues that are set to define the 21st century, from a crisis of capitalism to racism and climate change. We are funded almost entirely by our supporters’ donations and represent an alternative to the traditional billionaire owned media landscape. Our Head of Digital is taking a 6 month (unpaid) sabbatical this winter and we need to increase resources to our Digital Team over this period. We are looking for a flexible and talented Web Developer to work with us to bring our outstanding journalism products to our audience in efficient and enjoyable ways.

Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and dynamic Web Developer to work across our tech stack and products. Primarily this role with be building features and views on both our WordPress website and our Meteor donations webapp. There may also be some basic devops involved and work on other less core services and products. If you really power through the roadmap there is also the chance to work on a mobile application alpha version.
As a member of the Digital Team, you will have regular work sessions and meetings with the acting Head of Digital, and will actively contribute to the culture of the Digital Team. You will also be in close working relationship with other stakeholders in the organisation, especially the Fundraising and Communications Manager.
While the role is initially a 7–9 month contract at two days per week to cover this sabbatical leave, there is a possibility of the role extending in the future. This will depend on budgetary constraints and match within the existing team. This is an opportunity to become a key part of the production processes of Novara Media as part of a growing Design team.

Key Responsibilities
- Building features and views for the WordPress website
- Building features and views for the Meteor webapp
- Collaborating with designers during design phases to optimise designs for quality, performance and build costs
- Maintaining and improving micro services and tooling
Candidate Requirements
- Proficiency and experience with WordPress as a platform and PHP as a language
- Advanced Javascript proficiency
- High quality HTML/CSS proficiency
- Proficiency with Git and Github
- Basic devops skills
- Design sensitivity and a feel for UX/UI
- Interest and commitment to Novara Media content and mission
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- 1 day a week in person in London office (can be negotiated)
Nice to Have
- Experience with the Meteor framework
- Experience with the Stripe and Mailchimp APIs
- Experience with extending WordPress core: Plugins, Guttenberg blocks, etc
- Experience with Figma, either as a designer or developer
- Awareness of the UK media landscape

Hours: 16 hours per week
Pay: £328 per week, based on £20.50 per week (NM flat living wage*)
